Indians are not new to racism or
alien to being treated shabbily in
other countries. Who can forget
the row over a turban ban in
France? Or the regular jabs at
being ‘desi’ in the UK? And, if
you thought Europe was where
racism flourished, then the recent
attacks in Australia come as a
reminder that Indians all over
the world are being subject to
heavy-duty racism, especially
students overseas. Is this a
sign of insecurity? Or is it just
random incidents being blown

The tectonic shift long ago
that separated continents
is happening once again—
only this time, it has taken
the form of racism. Long
confined to their countries, Asians,
including Indians, are now a major
proportion of overseas students, the
workforce and future torch-bearers
of the human race, even as developed
nations struggle with slowing economies
and unfavourable demography. Be it
Australia, the UK or USA—acceptance
has always been the issue. But, one thing
is clear: the recent spate of attacks on
students cannot be termed sporadic acts
of mischief. There is an unmistakable
pattern in these events—coloured
individuals in an alien country being
harassed by natives. What is probably
